Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. (Hebrews 11:1)
Many years ago, a man walked into one of the residential estates the organisation I worked for was building and requested that I show him around because he was interested and wanted to buy. As we were moving from room to room, I could hear him behind me speaking softly in tongues. I knew immediately he was trying to use faith to receive the house. After we were done, he boldly said, I will be back next week to conclude the transaction. He never came back. He was trying to receive what God has not promised him. He was putting a demand where God has not committed to a supply. Faith does not work that way. Abraham only received Isaac because God promised him.
Faith begins with what God has said. Elijah understood this principle. In 1 Kings 17, he did not move because he felt like moving; he moved when the word of the Lord came to him. God told him where to go, and Elijah obeyed. Later, in 1 Kings 18:1, the word of the Lord came again, and Elijah moved again. This teaches us an important principle: faith does not move ahead of God; faith responds to God. When we attempt to pursue something without God’s involvement, we may eventually become disappointed because our confidence was built on our desire rather than His commitment.
We must stay in prayer to receive a word or promise from God concerning our issues. God’s promise is like a promissory note. It is a legal tender. When God commits Himself to a matter, we have a foundation upon which faith can stand. His Word gives us confidence to pray, persevere and expect His intervention. Daniel demonstrated this in Daniel 9. He discovered Jeremiah’s prophecy concerning Israel’s restoration, and rather than becoming passive, he began to pray. God’s promise became the basis for Daniel’s intercession. Also, faith is activated by hope and sustained by God’s Word. Hope may arise from previous evidence, spiritual insight or, most importantly, God’s promises. Hebrews 11 is filled with people who acted on what they could not yet see because they trusted the God who had spoken.
Today, find what God has said, believe it, pray according to it, obey His instructions and refuse to surrender because circumstances look contrary. Faith does not deny reality; it declares that God’s Word is greater than the reality we currently see.

- Let’s ask God to help us to trust Him even when we cannot see the outcome.
- Let’s ask Him to give us grace to hear His Word, believe His promises, obey His instructions and remain steadfast.
