“And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.”
Colossians 3:15 (KJV)
The peace of Christ is much more than a feeling of calm or the absence of conflict. It is the authority of God at work in the heart of every believer. In Colossians 3:15, Paul encourages us to let the peace of God rule in our hearts. The word rule describes the work of an umpire—someone who makes the final decision. In the same way, God’s peace should have the final say over our thoughts, attitudes, words, and actions.
Many believers lose their peace because they allow fear, anxiety, bitterness, offence, or the opinions of others to take control of their hearts. When these things are given room, the gentle voice of the Holy Spirit becomes difficult to hear. But when the peace of Christ reigns within us, we receive wisdom to make sound decisions, grace to forgive, strength to endure difficult seasons, and the ability to live in unity with other believers. At times, choosing peace means letting go of an argument or accepting a loss, because preserving love and unity is far more valuable than proving ourselves right.
The peace of God is also one of the believer’s safest guides in making decisions. It is a more reliable witness to God’s will than dreams, visions, or spiritual experiences alone. Dreams may be impressive, visions may seem convincing, and experiences may feel powerful, but they should never take the place of the inward peace that comes from the Holy Spirit.
Paul demonstrated this in 2 Corinthians 2:12–13. Although the Lord had opened a door for ministry in Troas, Paul had no peace in his spirit because Titus was not there. Instead of staying because of the opportunity before him, he left for Macedonia. This teaches us that not every open door is meant to be entered immediately. We should seek not only opportunities but also the peace of God before taking our next step.
God’s peace is both a gift to receive and a guide to follow. It reminds us that He is with us, even when life feels uncertain. So guard your heart carefully. Refuse to give room to anything that steals the peace Christ has given you. Instead, cultivate a thankful heart, knowing that gratitude strengthens our confidence in God’s wisdom and His perfect plan.
Today, let the Prince of Peace take His rightful place on the throne of your heart. Allow His peace to guide every conversation, every decision, and every relationship.
