“His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.” (John 2:5 KJV)

Among all that God created, man alone can reflect His attributes and make real choices. God gave us the freedom to obey Him or reject Him, but He also established justice so that every decision carries accountability. Though we are sovereign beings, God still desires willing submission from us.

From the beginning, God has always sought men and women who will do His will. In David, He found a servant after His own heart (1 Samuel 13:14). David was not perfect, but he had a heart ready to obey. That is the kind of heart God values.

A servant does not argue with his master; he obeys. This was seen at Cana, where the servants followed Jesus’ instruction without question, and water became wine (John 2:3–10). Their obedience revealed the heart God delights in. True servants trust God’s word above human reasoning.

Another mark of a servant is that he seeks to please his master, not men. Paul understood this when he said that if he still pleased men, he would not be the servant of Christ (Galatians 1:10). A true servant lives for God’s approval alone.

It is no surprise that the apostles often called themselves servants (Romans 1:1; 2 Peter 1:1; James 1:1). Only those with a servant’s heart can truly do God’s will on earth. Jesus Himself showed us the way by taking the form of a servant and humbling Himself to the point of death, then being exalted by God (Philippians 2:7–9).

A servant’s heart is developed, not inherited. David learned faithfulness while tending his father’s sheep in the wilderness (1 Samuel 17:34–37). In the same way, Israel was humbled in the wilderness so they could learn dependence on God (Deuteronomy 8:2). Humility is part of the servant’s heart. It is also formed in us when we ask Him to in prayer.

Prayer Point:

Let us thank God for His Word and ask Him to form in every believer the heart of a true servant—one that obeys Him gladly, seeks His approval above men, walks in humility, and lives to please Him.
