5 This is what the Lord says: “Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who draws strength from mere flesh
and whose heart turns away from the Lord. Jeremiah 17: 5
Trusting in man means depending on men instead of God. Seeing a man as your provider, your protector, your all in all, etc. (Man in this writing stands forth both male and female). Trusting in man is also expressed in caring about pleasing men more than pleasing God. Also, in depending on your own strength. Any such dependency outside God is positioning yourself for doom now or later. It’s like “sitting on a time bomb”.
Man is not God. No matter how great a person is, they can fail you, disappoint you, betray you, fall short of your expectations and all kinds of undesired behaviour.
It is wrong and unwise to depend on men instead of depending on God because that makes that person your god. And what an unreliable god.
Does this mean we should not trust anyone in any capacity? There is a dimension of trust that is earned because people have proven themselves trustworthy, but we ought to still keep at the back of our minds that that person is still a man and can thus fail and therefore be ready to forgive if they fail. Looking at yourself, have you not disappointed others in one way or another before?
1 Corinthians 13:7 NIV, when describing the ways to express love, says “It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” The passage was about loving people, not just God. And you see the phrase “always trusts”. It means there is a form of trust you give, which is a kind of faith. An example is giving one the benefit of the doubt. Instead of jumping quickly into a negative conclusion, you can assume a positive one first, without excluding the possibility of being proven otherwise. The former approach starts with confidence while the latter starts with condemnation. And don’t we all like to be given confidence instead of distrust?
We are to put our trust in God, not man, centring our hope, joy, and peace on God. This way, if people fail you, you are still standing on a solid ground; God comforts you as you look to Him. “Jesus is my security” (a phrase in a song…).
Whoever betrays you does disservice to themselves, not you, because God will comfort you and turn it around for your good (Romans 8:28). So say this: “I am not God, and no one is my God; I do my best and hope the best, but I trust God”.
Prayer Point:
Let’s thank God for His word today.
Let’s pray that God will expose any idols we might have in our hearts.
Let’s pray that God will help us learn to trust Him and depend on Him in everything.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.
