Human beings ate the bread of angels; he sent them all the food they could eat. — Psalm 78:25 (NIV)
While recounting God’s acts in the wilderness for the children of Israel, David interpreted the Israelites eating the manna that God rained down from heaven every morning as men eating “angels’ food.” If so, it raises a thoughtful question: do spirits eat?
In most parts of the Old Testament, the word “angel” is translated from the Hebrew word mal’ak, which means “messenger.” However, the word translated as “angels” in Psalm 78:25 comes from the Hebrew root ‘abbîyr, which elsewhere in Scripture is rendered as “mighty ones,” “strong ones,” or “valiant.” Before looking closely at why that translation matters, let us consider what Jesus said about manna.
When speaking to the crowd, Jesus Christ declared:
“I am the true bread that came down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will not die as your ancestors did (even though they ate the manna) but will live forever.” — John 6:58 (NLT)
The manna provided in the wilderness was a prophetic shadow pointing to the true substance: Jesus Christ Himself, who is revealed as the living Word of God (John 1:1, 14; Revelation 19:13).
When we spend time meditating on and receiving the Word of God, we are feeding on the true Manna—food that imparts eternal life and deepens our experiential knowledge of Him. As the prophet Daniel recorded:
“…but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.” — Daniel 11:32 (KJV)
The word “strong” here directly mirrors the essence of ‘abbîyr in Psalm 78:25—the food of the “strong ones” or “mighty ones.”
When the psalmist spoke of eating angels’ food, the deeper spiritual reality was not about literal winged beings eating physical meals in heaven, but about the sustenance meant for those who are made strong in God: His living Word. Whenever we consistently feed upon the Word of God, we are nourished with supernatural strength that far transcends natural human capacity.
Prayer Points
- Let us thank God today for the gift of His living Word—the true Manna that nourishes our souls and imparts divine life to our spirits.
- Let us ask the Lord to grant us grace and discipline to spend quality, consistent time in His Word daily, laying aside every distraction.
- Let us pray that as we feed upon the Word, our knowledge of Him will deepen, empowering us with supernatural strength to do exploits in our generation.
