“Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.”
Proverbs 22:29 KJV
Some time ago, I watched a man of God prophesy over a lady. He told her, “You always find yourself around great people.” As I considered what he said to her, the Lord impressed this thought upon my heart: “She is diligent.”
The word diligence means a steady, careful, and persistent effort put into doing a job or fulfilling a responsibility. It is the combination of hard work and close attention to detail, ensuring that things are done properly and on time. Scripture says that a person who is diligent in his business will stand before kings and not before mean men (Proverbs 22:29 KJV). The phrase “mean men” can also refer to ordinary or unknown people.
When we carry out our work and responsibilities diligently, God will increase our influence and cause us to be recognised and positioned among great people. Many believers fail in this area because they interpret trusting God for divine intervention as a replacement for diligence.
For example, a student who refuses to study because he or she spent the entire night praying may not pass an examination if sufficient time is not devoted to studying. Prayer is important, but prayer does not excuse us from doing what is required of us.
Though God intervenes in our affairs, we must not neglect our responsibility. An artisan who does his work carelessly or shabbily may soon lose customers and referrals, even if he is a Christian who prays and gives generously. Diligence is an attribute of God, evident in the excellence and order seen in His creation.
I remember the story of a Christian woman who worked in an organisation dominated by Muslims. Whenever she came to work, she would spend time praying. Afterwards, she would go around greeting the staff, neglecting her duties. She would delegate many of her responsibilities to a young intern in the company. This continued for some time until management replaced her with the same intern to whom she had delegated her responsibilities. Interestingly, the intern was also a Christian.
Prayer, fasting, and reading the Scriptures are good. In fact, we should be diligent in these areas if we want to grow spiritually. However, they should never become substitutes for diligence in our daily affairs. Rather, they are means through which we receive the wisdom, strength, grace, and empowerment to do diligently what God has entrusted to us.
Let us not only pray for great opportunities; let us also develop the diligence required to handle them when they come.

2. Let us ask God to help us become diligent in all that we do.
3. Let us ask God for grace to combine prayer with faithful action and responsibility.
4. Let us pray for wisdom and excellence in our work, ministry, studies, and every responsibility entrusted to us.
