“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.” Colossians 3:23–24 (KJV)
Is ministry reserved only for those who stand behind the altar? Many believers separate their “calling” from their “career” — as though God speaks only to the preacher, the choir leader, or the usher, and stays silent over the accountant, the engineer, the trader, the teacher, and the entrepreneur. But Scripture paints a wider picture of what it means to serve God.
When Jesus said, “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls” (Matthew 11:29, KJV), He was not issuing an invitation reserved for full-time clergy. A yoke is a tool of shared labour — it binds two workers to pull together toward the same purpose. To take Christ’s yoke is to let Him direct our daily labour, wherever that labour happens to take place. This is why Paul could also write, “With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men” (Ephesians 6:7, KJV). Service “as unto the Lord” was never limited to sanctuary work — it was meant to reframe all work.
God calls us co-labourers with Him (1 Corinthians 3:9), and that co-labouring extends into marriage, business, the arts, and every legitimate field of human endeavour. Consider R.G. LeTourneau, the industrialist and inventor of earthmoving machinery, who was known for pausing whenever his engineering projects hit a wall to seek God for a solution — and testified that God met him with answers on the factory floor, not just at the altar. Consider Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who is remembered for asking God to use him for something greater than himself — a prayer prayed not from a pulpit, but from the front lines of a movement. Their talents, wherever deployed, became instruments in God’s hand.
The truth is simple: your job is not a distraction from your calling — it may be your calling. God is not only listening for prayers whispered at the altar; He is listening for the quiet dependence of a life poured out wherever we are planted. When we work with excellence, integrity, and reverence, our workplace becomes an altar, and our labour becomes worship.
