Title: Moderation

Do not be overrighteous, neither be overwise—why destroy yourself? Do not be overwicked, and do not be a fool— why die before your time? It is good to grasp the one and not let go of the other. Whoever fears God will avoid all extremes. Ecclesiastes 7:16-18

As we read in the above verses, whoever fears God will avoid all extremes. It therefore means extremism is not God’s will for us. No or too little salt will make food tasteless, but too much salt will also render the food inedible; in the same way, moderation is needed in everything.

There is such a thing as being overrighteous or overwise. The opening verses say, “Why destroy yourself?” Acting like this will cause you to harm your own self because of the exaggeration, even in the things which are good and are recommended by the Word.

On the other hand, for the being overwicked or a fool, the opening verses say, “Why die before your time?” The bible says the wages of sin are death. So wickedness or foolishness may lead you to die before your time.

Both extremes are to be avoided. For instance, as much as fasting is important, there are times when your health may not permit you to fast as much as another person. On the other hand, as a believer, if you don’t fast, you can’t access the power that comes from fasting rightly (Luke 4:14, Matthew 17:21).

Jesus exemplified moderation in many instances. There were times when others expected him to be overly righteous to satisfy their own religious standards, but he didn’t, despite their pressure. For instance, when the disciples of John expected his disciples to fast often despite Jesus being with them (Matthew 9:14-15).

The word of God encourages us to combine all Scripture and find the balance (2 Timothy 3:16-17). We are encouraged to be diligent in our seeking of the Lord and doing His will, but also there is a place for moderation where the overly religious or self-righteous may disagree because they are not rooted in love or sincere faith.

Prayer Point:

  • Let’s thank God for His word today.
  • Let’s ask God to help us trust Him and guide us when we may be exaggerating because of religious fear or deception rather than faith.
